Aphasia Services

Aphasia is a communication disorder that occurs when the area of the brain responsible for language is damaged. Aphasia can impact expressive language, receptive language (understanding of language), reading, and/or writing skills. There are various types of aphasia.

Empowered Voice Rehabilitation follows a Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA).

The following are some of the things you may choose to work on with our certified speech-language pathologist:

  • Expressive language skills

    • Engaging in “small talk”

    • Telling stories or jokes

    • Talking on the phone

    • Conversations with family and/or friends

    • Community-based communication skills (e.g., bank, pharmacy, shopping)

    • Communication with medical professionals for health appointments/management

    • Giving directions

    • Workplace communication skills

    • Dating communication skills

    • Intimacy communication skills

  • Receptive language skills

    • Understanding language

  • Reading

    • Reading books, magazines, newspapers, letters, professional articles/journals

    • Reading emails, calendars, and to-do lists

  • Writing

    • Writing lists, checks, letters, cards, stories, and/or business documents

    • Texting

    • Composing emails

  • Communication Partner Training

Aphasia Evaluation


Each Aphasia Evaluation includes: 

  • Extensive review of medical/clinical records to determine potential impact of medications and treatment of other medical diagnoses on cognitive & communicative function

  • Evaluation of the impact of cognitive and/or behavioral skills on safety and functionality of communication

  • Aphasia Needs Assessment

  • Standardized assessment of expressive language, receptive language, reading, and writing

  • Language sample analysis

  • Recommendations for aphasia intervention and support, as necessary

  • Recommendations for optimizing communication and safety

  • Determination of need for further assessment to examine the impact of communication and/or cognition

  • Identification of need for referrals to other services or professionals to support optimal communication outcomes

  • Counseling, education, and training to the client, health care providers, and caregivers

  • Detailed written evaluation outlining findings and recommendations

Aphasia Evaluations are 120 minutes in length. Aphasia Evaluations are best completed in-person, but can be modified to telehealth if absolutely necessary.

Aphasia Treatment


Your personalized aphasia treatment session will include: 

  • Development of personal goals related to communication to maximize quality of life

  • Development and implementation of a personalized treatment plan to maximize safety and efficiency of communication

  • Counseling and advanced planning surrounding aphasia management, as applicable

Treatment Sessions are 50 minutes in length and can be scheduled in-person or via tele-practice.

Note: An Aphasia Evaluation must be completed prior to booking Personalized Aphasia Treatment Session(s).
