Chronic cough Treatment


Your personalized chronic cough treatment session will include: 

  • Development of personal goals

  • Development and implementation of a personalized treatment plan

  • Counseling and education regarding vocal health & hygiene, anatomy & physiology of the laryngeal mechanism, and cough suppression techniques

  • Practice of cough suppression techniques and breathing strategies in functional contexts

Treatment Sessions are 50 minutes in length and can be completed in person or via telehealth.

Each Chronic Cough Evaluation includes: 

  • Extensive review of medical/clinical records to determine potential impact of medications and treatment of other medical diagnoses on cough and laryngeal function

  • Structural and functional assessment of muscles and structures:

    • Oral peripheral mechanism examination

    • Cranial nerve examination

    • Analysis of head–neck control, posture, oral reflexes, and involuntary movements

    • Assessment of respiratory status, cough, and throat clearing abilities

  • Aerodynamic evaluation

  • Respiration, posture, and muscle tension evaluation at rest

  • Respiration, posture, and muscle tension evaluation during exertion

  • Provocation testing

  • Stimulability testing

  • Assessment

  • Goal building

  • Recommendations/Plan of care

  • Identification of need for referrals to other services or professionals to support optimal respiratory outcomes

  • Counseling, education, and training to the client, health care providers, and caregivers

  • Detailed written evaluation outlining findings and recommendations
